In the Hoop Project Club: Laser Engraving Class and Sales!

April 11th, 2026 marked a special milestone for Turtleworks: It was our first time bringing students to the FCSN Talent Show for a real sales experience, as well as our first attempt at on-site laser engraving. We’re happy to share that it went well!
At Turtleworks's xTool Laser Engraving class, we are beginning to build a more complete learning experience that connects classroom learning with real-world application. Students are not only learning technical skills like laser engraving, but also how to turn those skills into real products and meaningful interactions. This process helps make learning more practical and engaging.
In our class, students learned about safety and the basics of the engraving process and were introduced to xTool Studio. We explored how to work with text, shapes, and simple design elements. Through hands-on practice, they created their own designs and operate the laser machine to produce a personal project. Along the way, we kept the class engaging and enjoyable, often including interactive activities.
Throughout the event on 4/11 at the FCSN Annual Talent Show, we focused on selling handmade items, with personalized keychains quickly becoming the most popular product. In total, we reached $220 in sales with $120 in costs. The remaining profit was shared among our students and our young teachers.
More important than the numbers was the experience itself. This event gave students a chance to step into a real working environment. They helped collect payments, talked with customers, and assisted at the booth. It was so encouraging to see them actively trying, gradually building confidence, and becoming more comfortable interacting with others.
Also, the experience also showed us where more practice is needed. Speed and confidence in a real-world setting are skills that take time to develop. This kind of on-site, real-time work is something we will continue to practice and improve on in future sessions.
So far, students have created a variety of items, including name keychains, engraved pens, custom tags, and small gifts such as “#1 Mom" and "#1 Dad” pieces. They also practice making personalized keychains designed for real sales, helping them connect their creativity with practical application. We are also immensely grateful for the support and engagement from parents.
During the event, we were excited to meet people who showed interest in what we do. Some asked if we could collaborate with their summer camps to help students create personalized keychains, and FCSN also mentioned the possibility of working together on custom items with their logo. These conversations showed us that there are many opportunities ahead, and we hope to continue growing step by step as a team.
This semester has been busy and, at times, tiring. With the shop running actively and laser engraving being new, a lot of time has gone into preparation, design, and teaching. Even so, there is a strong sense of hope. Our students already have solid basic computer skills, and with continued practice, we believe they will keep improving and gaining confidence.
At Turtleworks, we believe learning is most meaningful when it connects to real life. This experience was just the beginning, and we look forward to many more opportunities ahead!
