Turtleworks In the Hoop Project Classes

From the very first stitch, the In the Hoop Project Classes transform embroidery from a solitary pastime into a dynamic learning adventure that builds not only technical know-how but also essential life and social skills. Each session brings together small cohorts—last year we ran two sessions of eight weekly classes, each serving six eager learners—where everyone learns to trim, cut, hoop, and set up an embroidery machine, master thread-changing and tension, and finish their work with neat folding and packaging. Alongside these tangible embroidery techniques, students practice reliability, follow detailed instructions, ask for help, and learn from students around them.

Each class follows a hands-on progression: after a quick warm-up and overview of the main subject the students are learning about, students dive into real projects. In Lesson 2, for instance, they explore appliqué by cutting a bright carrot shape from felt, placing it on a stabilizer, and securing it with smooth satin stitches before adding leafy accents.

The impact has been heartfelt. Parents and students have been clamoring for the next session since January—eager to experience projects ranging from embroidered tote bags, towels, and t-shirts to Japanese sashiko samplers and charming Mother’s Day keychains and greeting cards. One mother, Misun (HaeRam’s mom), shared, “I am very happy about this class after two sessions. The structured small groups, well-prepared lessons, and consistent sequence of activities mean students are busy, engaged, and achieving their goals every week. I know your class is always well prepared and focused on what they need. Thanks for your efforts.”

Looking ahead, we’re excited to bring the In the Hoop Project Classes back with fresh projects. Our goal is to keep offering a fun, welcoming space where students learn through their interests, build real-life skills, and connect with others. One stitch at a time, they’re growing in confidence, ability, and friendship.
